Hypnosis for Anxiety
It's perfectly normal to get anxious occasionally - but if you're starting to feel nervous or worried continually, or are plagued by 'what if' thoughts, it's time to get help, as it can be detrimental not only to your mental health, but your physical health, too. Our 'fight or flight' response is essential for our survival, but when it's overactive, anxiety and panic attacks (see Panic Attacks) can result. By means of relaxation and visualisation, along with thought-stopping and breathing techniques, hypnotherapy can help you to overcome anxiety, put things in perspective and feel calm and in control again. It can also help you to develop coping strategies that will help you to enhance your self-esteem and face the future with optimism. If your anxiety is linked to a certain upcoming event, such as an exam, presentation, wedding/christening speech or driving test, see Exam Nerves, Performance Anxiety or Passing Driving Tests.
THE EVIDENCE?
The British Medical Journal states that 'there is good evidence from randomised controlled trials that both hypnosis and relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety.'
